The research work at the institute for EMK is concentrated on topics in the field of microtechnology, microactuators, measurement and sensor technology, the methodology of development and manufacturing processes. Thereby the medical engineering prioritizes.

The professional reorientation of the institute appears in the installation of the clean room laboratory for microtechnology. This new laboratory is to offer on the one hand a technological base for future research projects in the wide field of microtechnology, on the other hand students are to have an access towards the on-site manufacturing and process technologies concerning the microtechnology.

In the year 2003 negotiations of Darmstadt University of Technology with an automotive and lighting technology foundation led to the result, that the successful specific area of lighting technology of emeritus Prof. Schmidt-Clausen will be carried on in terms of a founded professorship at Darmstadt University of Technology. Within the scope of a strategic planning the the lighting technology has been assigned to the institute for EMK.
